Senior Forensic Identification (SFIC)

Formerly known as Advanced Identification Course

Purpose

The purpose of thiscourse is to hone the identification specialist's expertise in the recognition, gathering, examination and presentation of evidence. The course is designed to show the necessity of co-ordinating the investigator's skills with those of forensic specialists and other specially trained personnel in related fields. It is also designed to keep the specialist current regarding new techniques in the identification field.

  6. new techniques in fingerprints and physical evidence
  7. blood stain pattern interpretation
  8. elective subjects

Student selection criteria

The course is open to all personnel who:

  1. Have successfully completed the Forensic Identification Course or equivalent. (An equivalent course is one that teaches the basic principals of photography, fingerprint identification and scenes of crime examination including the collection, identification, preservation and presentation of various types of physical evidence). Please include documentation of equivalent courses when applying.
  2. Are presently employed as full time Scenes of Crime Examiners. (i.e. working in the area of photography, fingerprint identification, scenes of crime examination and evidence collection/presentation).
  3. Have at least three (3) years and not more than ten (10) years experience as a Scenes of Crime Examiner (unless the student never attended this course).

Special features

Students may have to wear special clothing for some of the outdoor field scenes (wet grass, mud, etc.).

Absenteeism may result in the student not being permitted to complete the course. Students are therefore requested to clear up as many commitments as possible before proceeding on course, eliminating recall to their duty districts. Where such commitments are unavoidable, a fax from the student's department or a copy of the subpoena is requested.

Student assessment

Students will be examined on course content. Students are required to make a short presentation of 5 to 10 minutes to the class on a job-related topic.
