Post Blast Scene Technicians (PBLAST)

Purpose

To provide police officers with the necessary skills to coordinate a post blast scene. Emphasis is placed on organizing a team concept approach to the investigation of the scene.

Course content

  1. Review of explosives theory, effect of explosives, and results
  2. Post blast information update and bomber profiles
  3. Development of Departmental Standard Operational plans and the outfitting of an EDU command post
  4. On-scene evaluations, search patterns, sifting operations, and team concepts
  5. Collection, recording, packaging and storage of evidence
  6. Evaluation of physical evidence at the scene and support agencies
  7. Preparation of case evidence, crown involvement and expert witness court procedures

Student selection criteria

Students will be:

  1. Police Explosives Technicians who have completed either the Police Explosives Technicians Course or the Police Explosives Technicians Validation Course within the past three years
  2. Forensic laboratory technicians directly involved with post blast investigations
  3. Forensic Identification Technicians directly involved with post blast investigations

Student assessment: written examinations and practical exercises

Duration of course: ten working days

Class size: twenty-four students
