Learn how to prepare and communicate your operational plan on a variety of police operations

The "Major Crime Investigative Techniques" course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to employ advanced techniques used to investigate some of the most serious offences in the Criminal Code. The course focuses on the role of the "primary investigator" guiding candidates through different decision-making models which affect the speed, flow and direction of an investigation. Candidates are then asked to articulate and justify their strategic choices.

Selection Criteria

Candidates are peace officers serving in a specialized unit responsible for investigating crimes against persons.

Objectives

In this course participants will to:

  • evaluate a number of group decision making models to mitigate risks and select the best possible course of action;
  • prepare strategic and tactical operational plans and brief management and the investigative team accordingly;
  • develop their ability to employ a number of advanced investigative techniques; and
  • apply "Major Case Management" principles as they relate to the role and responsibilities of the Primary Investigator.

Evaluation

Students work in small groups to prepare an operational plan and brief an investigative team   and / or a panel of managers. This component is evaluated on a basis of pass or fail. There is also a written final exam evaluating students on their comprehension of the course content. They must achieve a passing mark of 70% on the exam. All work and assignments will be conducted during class hours – 08:00 to 16:00 hours.
