Explosives Familiarization Course (EFC)

Purpose of the course

This course is designed to enhance the capabilities of dog handlers trained in the explosive search profile with respect to the safe handling of explosives and potential hazzards of improvised explosive devices.

Objectives

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain the nature and effects of explosives.
  • Identify commercial, military, chemical and home made explosives.
  • Describe a chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) agent and how a CBRN incident is dealt with.
  • Identify components which make up an improvised explosive device and victim initiated triggering device.
  • Explain the use of render safe equipment used in the explosives disposal field.
  • Explain the method of operation of the explosive vapour detector (EVD).
  • Identify the safety and legal requirements that must be fulfilled when procuring, storing, transporting and handling explosives.
  • Apply bomb threat procedures when responding to a bomb related incident.

Participant selection criteria

This course is open to all current and potential explosives profile dog handlers from qualified police and accredited security agencies.

Note: There is no need for your service dog to attend this course.

Participant Assessment

Participants will be assessed through a series of both written and practical exercises.

Duration: This course is five days long.

Location: This course will be held at the explosives training facility at the Canadian Police College.

Note: As part of the course there will be a visit to the range. This is an outdoor location, thus participants are expected to come prepared for the weather.

Number of participants: There will be a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 12 participants.

Language: This course will be delivered in English
