Specialized Vehicle Theft Investigative Techniques (SVTITC)

Purpose

This course is designed to provide the student with the skills, knowledge and procedures needed to assist in the investigation of vehicle theft offences, and to promote a professional approach to vehicle theft investigation.

Course content

  1. The law and its practical application
  2. Public vehicle identification numbering and practical exercise
  3. Vehicle plant tours
  4. Organized auto theft investigations (National & International)
  5. Role of the Canadian Automobile Theft Bureau
  6. Serial number restoration
  7. Heavy equipment and tractor trailer identification and practical demonstration
  8. Vehicle arson/frauds
  9. Motorcycle identification with practical exercises
  10. Role of Revenue Canada (Customs and Excise)
  11. Special query (VIN's on CPIC)
  12. Vehicle "Chop Shops"
  13. Marine/personal watercraft identification

Student selection criteria

Students must be assigned, or about to be assigned, to a specialized unit mandated to investigate vehicle, motorcycle and heavy equipment thefts.

Student assessment

Students are required to complete all exercises and will be required to successfully complete a final examination in order to get certified.

Duration of course: ten working days

Class size: twenty-four students
