Aboriginal Gang Prevention and Diversion Strategies

Target Audience

Police Officers at a front end and / or supervisory level.

Those interested in taking this course will be selected as per the following:

  • Police officers working in locations where there is Aboriginal gang activity, or where Aboriginal gang activity is anticipated;
  • Police officers working in patrol, community or cultural relations, school resource, prevention or suppression units or other units that work with Aboriginal gang issues.

The Challenge

This nine day course will challenge students to:

  • Deepen their understanding of Aboriginal gang issues in Canada;
  • Empower and mobilize the community to work with the police to prevent and intervene in Aboriginal gang activity;
  • Develop a Community Action Plan focussed on Aboriginal gang prevention and intervention that is tailored to the capacity of your police agency and community; and
  • Create Aboriginal gang information presentations to educate fellow law enforcement personnel, agencies and community members.
